Classes

What we teach

Every class has a named teacher, a level and an age range on the schedule. A class runs from one hour to ninety minutes.

  • Ballet technique

Barre, center and traveling steps, taught in order. The core of the week at every company level.

    See ballet on the schedule
  • Jazz

Turns, leaps and rhythm, from the Junior Company up. Fitted practice clothes and bare feet or socks.

    See jazz on the schedule
  • Contemporary

Floor work, flowing phrases and movement that travels, starting at Company II and shown in the season's events.

    See contemporary on the schedule
  • Tap

Rhythm and sound from the Company I level, taught on a wooden floor with tap shoes.

    See tap on the schedule
  • Conditioning

A class built into the company week, where dancers warm up, build stamina and learn to look after their own training.

    See conditioning on the schedule
  • Recreational classes

Ballet, jazz and tap for ages 4 to 12 on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings. A dancer can move to the company track after a placement visit.

The ladder

From the first company level to pre-professional

Five levels, named for what a dancer does in them. Ages are a guide. Teachers place every dancer after a placement visit, and move them up one level at a time.

  1. 01

    Junior Company

    Ages 8 to 10
    Skills
    • Ballet barre and center work in order

    • First jazz and conditioning classes

    • Rehearsing: marking, spacing and counts

    Moving up

Teachers review every dancer in the spring and talk with the family first. A dancer moves up when class work is steady and the teachers agree.

  2. 02

    Company I

    Ages 10 to 12
    Skills
    • Longer ballet combinations

    • Turns, jumps and traveling steps

    • Tap and a first contemporary class

    Moving up

The same spring review. A teacher names what to work on, and the family hears the decision in a letter in May.

  3. 03

    Company II

    Ages 12 to 14
    Skills
    • Contemporary and lyrical technique

    • Learning choreography at pace

    • Conditioning built into the week

    Moving up

Teachers look at technique, rehearsal habits and how a dancer works with the group, then meet the family.

  4. 04

    Senior Company

    Ages 14 to 16
    Skills
    • A fuller week of ballet, jazz and contemporary

    • Saturday company rehearsals

    • Audition-style classes

    Moving up

A teacher meeting with the dancer and the family in the spring, and a written note on what the next level asks.

  5. 05

    Pre-professional

    Ages 15 to 18
    Skills
    • Technique every weekday across styles

    • Pointe work when a teacher says a dancer is ready

    • Audition coaching and guest teachers

    Moving up

By invitation, after a meeting between the teachers, the dancer and the family. It is the highest level here.

Sample levels.

Dancers from the recreational program join the ladder after a placement visit, when they and their teachers choose to.
